Introduction:

Tau protein is a soluble microtubule associated protein that functions in microtuble development and stabilizaiton. Dimentia diseases of the nervous system, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, are associated with tau proteins that do not stabilize microtubules properly.  Tau proteins interact with tubulin to stabilize microtubules and promote tubulin assembly into microtubules.  Tau controls tubulin assembly by binding of its multiple isoforms and by phosphorylation.  The tau hypothesis states that abnormal phosphorylation of tau results in the transformation of normal adult tau into PHF-tau (paired helical filament) and NFTs (neurofibrillary tangles).  Tau protein has also been detected in exosomes.
