EGTA (ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid) is a chelating agent with much higher affinity for calcium than magnesium ion. EGTA is included in buffer solutions employed in intracellular calcium measurements to adjust free calcium levels. Adjusting the free calcium levels allows the researcher to identify the source and mechanism of calcium mobilization. EGTA is typically used at a concentration of 5 mM.
The EGTA solution offered by FIVEphoton Biochemicals has been stringently formulated for ion channel physiology experimentation, particularly for intracellular calcium imaging.
